Despite opening to lukewarm reviews, the film New Year’s Eve took the No. 1 at the box office this weekend with $13.7 million in the U.S. and Canada.
The romantic comedy - starring a cast too large to name from Zac Efron, Sarah Jessica Parker, Halle Berry, Ashton Kutcher, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Hillary Swank, Jessica Biel, Katherine Heigl, Robert De Niro, Sophia and Michelle Pfeiffer - tells the stories of several couples and singles in New York over the course of New Year's Eve.
New adult comedy "The Sitter," starring Jonah Hill as a reluctant babysitter, finished second with an estimated $10 million domestically from Friday through Sunday.
The newest "Twilight" vampire romance movie, winner of the past three weekends, slipped to third place with $7.9 million.
Overall, ticket sales are dismal in the United States and Canada. The past weekend marked the lowest total since September 2008 and are down nearly 16 percent from the same time last year, Reuters reports.
